Patrick McCann, born and raised as the pope's adopted son, decides to restore the former greatness of the Catholic Church. To do this, he needs to create the appearance of an Illuminati conspiracy, and everything must be very serious and cruel. For the sake of his goal, he has to kill cardinals, and in the most insidious and complicated way, hinting at biblical motives. The main goal of the fanatic is to organize an explosion of the burial place of St. Peter, for this he steals an explosive substance directly from CERN.

Professor Robert Langdon is invited to sort out the strange messages, and in the whole complicated case. He manages to discover three cardinals' deaths, as well as save the fourth, trapped by McCann. Gradually, the investigator realizes that all the evidence leads to the Vatican, but Patrick, taking the temporary place of the pope, decides to stipulate Langdon in order to dismiss possible suspicions from himself, accusing the latter of an Illuminati conspiracy. The criminal's plan fails miserably when videos accidentally fall into the hands of the police, indicating his involvement in this terrible plan.
